The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has
seized five containers of counterfeit aphrodisiacs, known as Heragra and
Ziagra.The Director General of the agency, Dr. Paul Orhii, who made the
disclosure at a news briefing where the drug fakers were paraded before
journalists in Lagos on Monday, stated that NAFDAC officials intercepted
another container of fake
drugs at the APC terminals in Apapa.
The value of the seized products was put at N270 million.
The NAFDAC boss pointed out that consumption of the counterfeit drugs
could lead to heart attacks, liver failure, kidney damage and death in
its victims.
He said, “The aphrodisiacs were labeled as anti-malarial drugs; still
they were intercepted at the terminals. These products are known drugs
of misuse and abuse, which can result in very serious health problems
such as increased blood pressure, stroke, ulceration of the
gastro-intestinal tract, tolerance and dependence.
“May I also state that regular use of these drugs overtime can cause
stroke, liver diseases, kidney disease, swelling of the face and tongue
and skin disease”.
It was learnt that NAFDAC carried out the operation in collaboration with the officials of the Customs and Port Services.
